What Makes A Good 2x2 Cube?
Magnets play a huge part in determining a good 2x2 from a bad one. Granted, magnetic cubes are down to preference, however they do also have alot of benefits.
We would recommend a magnetic 2x2 ✅
It's not just 3x3 that should corner cut well. All twisty puzzles need a little tolerance when it comes to aligning the layers and trying to make your next move. Corner cutting can be aided with correct speed cube lube and correct tensioning of your 2x2 but it's always good to start with a good base model.
We recommend many of latest GAN or MoYu or QiYi 2x2's, more on these later ✅
It's always good to have a balance between the corner cutting of your puzzle, and the stability/control. Corner cutting gets better the looser your cube is, however, you do sacrifice stability and control (you are also more prone to your cube popping/exploding the looser it is).
We don't recommend loosening your cube to the point it falls apart just for you to have good corner cutting, if this is happening then you could potentially be due an upgrade. ❌
UV coating is a ultra glossy lacquer applied to the outside of your cube which helps with grip. Most people love it but there are a few that still prefer non UV coated cubes.It's best to try one at a speed cubing competition before commiting, just to be on the safe side.
We recommend UV Coating but it's a little hard to come by on 2x2's as of early 2024 ✅
Our Recommendations
We're starting the list with our always top selling cube at competitions. The GAN 251 M Leap UV is always super popular at competitions we vend at, and for good reason too.
It's stable, has a lovely exterior finish (UV Coating which aids grip) and is fast without being 'too fast'. The accessories included also allow you to adjust the setup/feel to your liking, the GES numbers can be swapped out for a tighter or looser feel.
Honourable Mention
We have an honourable mention here, the MGC 2x2. Released some years ago, its still one of our top selling 2x2's ever.
The MGC line of NxN cubes are world famous these days. Almost every cuber that has been around for a year or so has tried one or even mains one. Out of the box, the MGC2 is smooth, stable and controllable. It's worth adding a little 'fast' lube such as Aqua, Blitz, Lunar or DNM-37 to speed it up a little.
Budget UV 2x2
Just incase your after a cheaper UV coated 2x2 we thought we would include the DianSheng Solar 2M UV. Priced at less than £10 its definetely a great cube for those 'beginner' cubers looking to try a UV cube for the first time but don't fancy paying GAN prices.
It's not the best out of the box and requires a little more setup and tweaking than some of the higher-end cubes listed above, but don't let that put you off.
